Providing resources so that people can help themselves to a future free from hunger
Kathleen Stack
Vice President, Freedom from Hunger
Across the globe, in such varied regions as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and North Africa, a lack of financial education prevents millions from attaining the resources necessary to build their futures of health and financial success. Freedom from Hunger is working with a large and growing number of private institutions, governments and foundations to bring much-needed education to the world’s low-income families and helping turn a dire situation into one of optimism and actionable sustainability.
Well-known in the international development community for its pioneering work in integrated microfinance, adult education and documentation of impacts, Freedom from Hunger is an international development organization currently working in seventeen countries across the globe, bringing innovative and sustainable self-help solutions to the fight against chronic hunger and poverty. Together with local partners, the organization equips families with resources they can use to build futures of health, hope and dignity.
In 1988, Freedom from Hunger developed the world’s first integrated microcredit/health and nutrition education program. Today, the organization still follows the vision of its founder, Clifford Clinton, an entrepreneur who first took action against hunger in his own neighborhood using sound nutritional science to guide its programs, being mindful of scarce resources and, most of all, giving people resources to help themselves to a future free from hunger through the unique Global Financial Education Program.

This effort was established jointly by the Microfinance Opportunities and Freedom from Hunger organizations. Microfinance Opportunities is a women-owned microenterprise resource center that promotes client-led microfinance. Established in 2002 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, it seeks to facilitate an improvement in poor people’s lives by increasing their access to well-designed and well-delivered financial services. Microfinance Opportunities occupies a specialized market niche within the microfinance industry, providing action-oriented research, training, and technical assistance, and is established as a microenterprise resource center to promote client-led microfinance to help poor people increase their access to well-designed and delivered financial services and focuses on financial education, micro-insurance and impact assessment. As it is Freedom from Hunger’s mission to bring innovative solutions to the fight against hunger, the partnership between both organizations seemed quite natural.
