From Airport to Downtown
Taxi
Taxis are the recommended way to travel to central Delhi, especially for those who are not familiar with the city. Metered taxis are available, but it is best to hire pre-paid taxis (go to the counter at the airport) to avoid any arguments concerning fares. It will take about 30 minutes to get to the city centre.
Bus
Airport buses leave for Delhi 24 hours a day and take about 45 minutes to get to the city centre.
Car rental
Car rental is available at the airport via Avis and Hertz.
Transportation
Taxi
There are two types of taxis in Delhi, private taxis (black) and the state-permit taxis (yellow). The minimum fare is Rs8.5. There is an extra charge for luggage above 20 kg and a 25% night charge between 11 pm and 5 am.
Bus
Buses are the most popular means of transport, and the state-owned Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is the major service provider for the city. The DTC now operates the world’s largest fleet of environmental friendly CNG buses. For more information and a bus schedule, please visit:

Auto Rickshaw
Auto rickshaws, also known as scooters, are one of the most popular means of public transport in Delhi. The rickshaws run on environmental friendly CNG and are usually green and yellow. The cost of a ride is in the range of Rs20 (US$0.50) to Rs75 (US$1.85).

Currency
Bank Hours
Most banks are open from 10 am to 2 pm from Monday to Friday and up to 12 noon on Saturdays. Some branches of banks are also open on Sundays. There are several foreign banks located around Connaught Place, including American Express, Bank of America, HSBC, Bank of Tokyo, Banque Nationale de Paris, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered, Citibank and Mercantile Bank, among others. ATMs are widely available.
Coins and Notes
The Indian currency, the rupee, is subdivided into 100 paise (singular paisa). Large values of Indian rupees are counted in terms of lakh (100 thousand), crore (100 lakhs) and arawb (100 crore). The use of million and billion is not common.
Tipping
Tipping is generally expected at hotels and restaurants, at a rate of around 10% of the bill or around Rs5 for other services. Tipping is not necessary for taxis or auto rickshaws.

Language
India does not have a single official language. Hindi and English are the most widely spoken.
Climate
Delhi has a continental climate that includes a very hot summer and very cold winter. The temperature varies from 45°C in summers to 4°C in winters. In early December, the temperature is expected to be around 16°C.
